An interesting case. You can break the law on several counts - but because you have come from somewhere we cant send you back - well then there is nothing we can do.
My question is why doesn't this warrant a jail sentence???
Yes, this is a tricky one. Which countries can we, or can't we, deport convicted criminals to. I don't know the details of this case or if he has previous convictions for violence, drugs or robbery, these are the cases most likely to be considered suitable for deportation.
Now I wouldnt be so heartless as to say we should send people back to war zones.
BUT the thing that gets me is - firstly this chap is driving a car yet has no job. I only got my first car at the age of 28 - and it came with the job. I bought my first car less than a year ago - a £5000 nissan figaro - with my wife. So how on earth does this chap with no job have a car.
Secondly I know of a colleague of my Mothers who hit a wall and was found to be over the limit some time ago in Chesterfield. He was given a prison sentence. Yet in this case - someone who also has no insurance - an offence, and who breaks bail - isnt sent to jail.
Now I wouldnt be so heartless as to say we should send people back to war zones.
If we take this argument too far, then all Iraqis could have the right to live in Britain.
Personally I think if a crime is serious enough, eg Rape, Murder, then they should be sent home after sentence even if it is to almost certain death. Simply because they made the choice.
In this case I agree with Jonathan that he should have been sent down.
